Mint says " Welcome to today's roleplay workshop! Today, Nafai (and hopefully Aeliana as well) will be leading a discussion on roleplaying with firelizards. How often do you roleplay with your firelizard? Enough? How do you roleplay with them? How else could you incorporate it into your roleplayed life?

You say "Thank you all for coming tonight! We're here to talk about Firelizards. Lots of people have them, but they're rarely seen about actively RPed. A problem? Maybe. We're here to find out what sort of things you can RP with your firelizard! We'll be covering two main topics: FLs RPing with humans, and FLs RPing with other FLs."

You say "When RPing with your firelizard, there's a series of DOs and DON'Ts we should look at. What should you do with your pet, and what shouldn't you? First topic is: communication! Firelizards don't speak, not vocally or telepathically the way dragon's do. But they can convey emotions or images to their owners. What sort of things d'you think your firelizard might tell you?"

Keesem nod nods.

Keesem grins. "Wouldn't the firelizards send mental images of things that they remember, or things that frightened them?"

Nafai nods, "That's a good point. Things that are important to them, they'd likely gossip back to you. A birth, a death, a strange dragon visiting, a mating flight, maybe a good hunt with lots of tasty food. How can you RP these sorts of things?"

Mint hmms, although they tend to be easily confusable and are more likely to transmit impressions rather than images per se in my understanding.

Merryweather nods with Mint. You're not likely to get much, especially out of a green. More confusing than anything else. :)

You say "Right, so maybe there's something going on in another room that your firelizard wants you to come see, but you can't quite interpret the immages your pet is sending you."

Jalynia has arrived.

Aithne says "Plus they would only be images that would be important to them. They make poor spies for the most part. ;). Some are better than others though."

Mint says "It can be distracting if they're trying to communicate something, particularly if it's unclear. It might reduce your ability to concentrate on a conversation, say."

You say "Right, so you probably shouldn't RP recieving very specific details about something a firelizard wouldn't have any interest in, like who bet what for Honshu's next clutch."

You say "So, with communication in mind, possible ways to introduce RP could be a firelizard appearing from between and trying to get your attention to tell you something. What else could start RP with a firelizard? I think the most common scene I've seen is: feeding!"

Aeliana says "Anything your firelizard does that's beyond the norm... do they have an affinity for a particular color... do they enjoy the feel of a particular fabric... do they seem to gravitate toward a certain person other than their impressee? All of these things are great RP starters... but either you have to come up with them or the person who created your FL will have to do it. I encourage the latter, but... :}"

Aeliana watches herself quiet the entire room. Woo! :}

You say "Just like people do, each firelizard will prefer different foods. But, like dragons, they all prefer the same type of food: raw meat. This means that when you try to feed them, they probably won't go your meatrolls looking for meat :) Although mature firelizards do tend to hunt and take care of themselves, they like to be pampered with special 'treats,' like strips of raw, bloody meat."

Amythyst says "Some of my lizards elsemu* have a habit of 'admiring' sparkly things..."

Aeliana says "Ok... so what have we covered so far? How to begin RP with a firelizard? :}"

Amythyst says "Well they could perch on the shoulder, lay across the shoulders with neck and tail wrapped loosely around their human's neck making an 'interesting' necklace."

You say "I think people are missing an important part of firelizard biology when they have their firelizard peek out from their hair: A) They're too big for that, and B) They've got really sharp claws. When firelizards perched on people's shoulders, they have to wear a thick leather shoulderpad to prevent the claws from sticking into their flesh. On the other hand, you can RP your firelizard crawling on you and scratching!"

Mint says "The weight might get annoying after a while though. That's something to roleplay with them. And odds are anyone "wearing" an fl will have regular clawing problems. :)"

Nicolo says "Not to mention if the fl gets excited about something."

Merryweather nods to Nafai, though, truthfully, if their did have a shoulder pad, and enough hair, they could peek out. :)

You say "So! Maybe you're wearing your swimsuit and here comes your firelizard to land on your shoulder: you can RP shooing him off so he couldn't rend your flesh!"

Mint says "Related roleplay: Roleplay commissioning a shoulder pad from a weaver or a tanner. :)"

Amythyst says "Can their front claws sheath like dragons?"

Nicolo says "I suppose it depends on the persnality of the fl."

Merryweather says "Dragon front claws don't sheath. :)"

Mint says "Also, in terms of a firelizard wanting to sit on your shoulders: for some of them it may be a bad habit left over from when they were small enough to more realistically do it, depending on the owner. They're impressionable creatures, train them carefully."

You say "No, neither dragons nor firelizards have sheathable claws..."

You say "They're more talons than claws, direct extentions of the fingerbones. I think?"

Merryweather nopes. :) They are talons, yep, and don't sheath, and can rip off

Nafai goes wildly offtopic for a moment... "Do they grow back if they rip off?"

You say "There's something else then! Maybe your firelizard got into a scuffle with a Wherry and lost a talon or two."

Merryweather says "You get a dragonhealer to put a little numbweed on the bed, and eventually they'll grow back :)"

Nafai does remind, however, that you shouldn't just waltz into a room with a healer RPing an injuried FL, expecting them to heal it for you. You should page a healer and ask before RPing with them.

Mint says "And healers don't have dragonhealer training - necessarily."

Merryweather grins. Dragonhealer. Healer's, nor beastcraft, heal dragonkin :)

Aeliana says "Ok... so it's all well and good that FLs interact with people because they, chances are, will be doing the majority of their RP with and around humans... but how about FLs interacting with other FLs or dragons? Do they communicate? Do they share the same sorts of 'interests'?"

Nicolo says "How much would basic first aid differ for dragons/firelizards? Stopping blood loss and such?"

Merryweather grins. It's not blood, it's ichor, and it's a little different, but you have to have training in it. Your average Pernese (Anne thing here) wouldn't know.

Merryweather says "As for interacting with others, depends what colour you have, and with a dragon, what sort of dragon you're interacting with."

Merryweather says "My alt's dragon adores the things, because she plays with them, unfortunately they don't particularly take to her, cos she's a bit big, clumsy. :)"

Mint nods to Merry, good point! Hmm, which could have interesting repercussions in human interactions - you may have reconciled with someone you had a prolonged problem/difficult relationship with, but will your firelizard's reactions be confused by the memory of all the badness?

Nafai doesn't think Firelizards read your subcontious thoughts the way Dragons might.

Aeliana hrmms, "Perhaps not, but they might mimic your behaviour.

Aeliana says "And if you are perpetually avoiding someone or getting angry with them... and then you patch things up... your companion might have some trouble with it."

Merryweather says "and they do pick up on your emotions."

You say "Firelizard mating flights can be even /more/ fun than dragon flights! Why? Well, first of all there aren't quite as many post-flight restrictions *ahem*. Flights can also take place closer to the ground, even interacting with things! A flight through a courtyard, chasing past windows and people before going up higher into the air. They also tend to be much shorter and skip the blooding part."

Merryweather doesn't think they'd do much blooding, and maybe not at all, but they do show tendencies. :)

Aithne says "Blooding can be used as the time to gather the chasers and get organized. But one thing though about chasing through the courtyard and such, it would probably be wise to make sure that you aren't interrupting a scene."

You say "An important thing to remember with flights is that you /don't/ have to have eggs after! Your firelizard can hide the eggs and you never find them. No work coding or running a hatching. Crystal has regular on-camera flights with no eggs :) And yes, do plan the flight ahead of time and make sure everyone in the room knows there's a flight going on."

Merryweather says "Maybe if there were a scrap of meat pieces in the kitchens, she'd try and get one, but it wouldn't be hard to control. As for how much of an influence. Greens have no influence, not unless you have say 5 rising all at once, golds, a little, but not more than uncomfortableness"

Mint says "And, on the subject of avoiding interuptions, the +flight command can be used to add in firelizard flights as well as dragon ones."

You say "So Firelizard flights can be fun, and short, and not in the least bit stressful. Plan the event, RP a proddy Green or Gold the day of the flight, and go at it! Greenflights can be as sort as 4 poses (3 chase and a catch attempt). No after-flight responsabilities. Definately a fun thing."

Mint has a couple thoughts on firelizard hygiene! If you're feeding your firelizard while eating, remember that you're handling raw meat. May want to wash your hands. :)

Merryweather remember that you can get extra rp by seeking out a dragonhealer for your FL should they be injured, but ask the dragonhealer before arriving, and never heal your own FL unless trained. :)

Mint says "Also, yes, firelizards prefer raw meat as a general rule. And these days, all kitchens readily keep raw meat available for the 'lizards. If you don't feel like slaughtering something small for them yourself. :)"

Merryweather says "Plus, there's always scraps in the feeding grounds of weyrs"

You say "Oh yes, that's a good point. Extra good FL eating after a flight with those blodded carcasses lying around :)"

Mint says "And oiling. Firelizards can use some small-scale oiling now and again to help maintain their hides, like dragons do."
