Candidate Bonfire and Storytelling Night

March 22 1999, Logged by Telinda

Lakeside Meadow - Southern Weyr

Dovath lifts her head and croons to the Weyrwoman.

Telinda nods and smiles at the tiny green as she passes.

You walk over to White Sands Beach.
White Sands Beach - Southern Weyr(#410RDJa$)

Nareisa sits down after taking a couple of rather large spiderclaws, struggling briefly to break open the thick shells.

Aidan adds a helping of redfruit crisp for dessert.

Aidan selects a gooey, sticky sweetbun for dessert.

Aidan pulls a tart from the dessert selection.

Benden baklava is added to a dessert plate by Aidan, a drudge whispering that Sarena made it.

Aidan selects a citron from one of the ones that Farlit gathered.

Imara filches a helping of the spiced fingertails Balinor made.

Marila pops another fingertail into her mouth, she sighs contentedly.

Telinda strides over, and grins, isn't she glad it's all done with! "Hello everyone" she calls out, lifting a hand in greeting.

Coriana places a nice selection of still hot shellfish on her plate.

Liwellan turns and waves to the weyrwoman with a smile and finds a spot to sit down. She eyes Aidan again as if scheming.

Aidan finishes the bubbly and pulls a plate of Benden baklava from the food table. He brings this back towards the bonfire and lays on the ground adjacent to said fire, plate of baklava on his stomach.

Coriana turns as she hears Telinda and smiles "Evening!" She takes her plate and bowl and finds a seat at a table.

Nareisa waves to the Weyrwoman, wrestling with the spiderclaws. Maybe this wasn't such a wonderful idea....

With the smelly chore finished and done with, Craw eyes the food but doesn't grab any, not even any of the bubblies "How can anyone eat after this stuff, I mean my stomach is uesy, that numbweed is bad, I mean I al glad it workds and everything but I don't like it, nope."

Imara dishes herself a plate of food and finds a seat on the sand. She picks up a fingertail and opens her mouth to eat it, but instead waves to Telinda. "Hello Telinda."

Telinda wanders over to the food table, carefully taking some of the peppers, gingerly careful of the heat. "How is everyone? Apart from smelly!

Coriana takes a fork and pokes at a shellfish, and removes the shell, before popping it in her mouth.

Marila swallows as she waves to the weyrwoman, "Fine." She grins.

Liwellan nods "I think we're all doing fine..though some of us seem hungrier then others."

Nareisa isn't smelling, but she does murmur "I'm fine thank you weyrwoman." Yes, she survived repairs chores. Not that some of the chairs did.

Imara looks at Craw as she begins to eat. "I got used to eating with the smell when I had numbweed duty. It's really not so bad once you start eating," she says as she licks her fingers. She smiles at Telinda and answers, "I'm doing well."

Aidan looks up to Telinda and nods. "Besides smelly? Tired. Sick? Anything between there should do quite nicely."

Craw goes over towards the water and says "Well I think I am going to have a bath, I mean the smell isn';t that good. You got used to that smell, I mean how can you get used that smell, it is a bad smell, I mean really bad, worse then fish guts too, I mean and fish guts don't smell good, ever smell fish guts?"

Marila chuckles, "I think fish guts and numbweed are nasty enough..."

Telinda peers at Craw, shakes her head, and nods to everyone else as she licks the remains of the peppers off her fingers.

Imara nods and picks up another fingertail. "Yes I've smelled fish guts before. But anyway, I really had no choice but to get used to it. I couldn't get it off me."

Liwellan wrinkles her nose at the comment Craw makes but otherwise doesn't add to it.

Coriana finishes off her shellfish, and moves her bowl of chowder closer, dipping her spoon in.

Craw goes into the water and leaves for awhile, the only sounds heard is a splashing along with a song that is off key, what the song is, well who knows but the lad is trying to sing it anyways. When he comes back to the beach he is dripping wet but looks happier.

Telinda giggles, hooking at thumb at Craw, "He sounds almost as bad as Kat does with those wretched pipes!"

Aidan winces at Telinda's commend and painfully nods, a hand going to his right ear. "You're telling me," he murmurs ruefully.

Coriana grins at Telinda "You know, it's a wonder they haven't 'disappeared' yet, those pipes of Kat's."

Marila laughes delightedly as she watches.

Imara grins as she continues to eat her food.

Nareisa scoots out with a "Oh no!"

Nareisa strides over to the lakeside meadow.

Telinda nods to Coriana, "Someone should -steal- them!" she hints, loudly.

"Who's pipes? Does somebody have pipes." Craw says as he comes closer to the group "Oh, will there be music, I like music, well I like music most the time, I mean I like most songs, do you like songs? I like songs, I wish the dragon's would hum a song, I can't wait for that."

Aidan nods. "I like music," he replies to what little of Craw's statements the lad actually understood. "I was a harper, once upon a time, after all."

Marila shakes her head, "I don't think we should make the pipes disappear, Kat really likes them. Though personally I want to shatter them into a million pieces, he and I always have chores together. And he is always playing them."

Coriana grins impishly at the Weyrwoman and winks "That could be arranged!"

Telinda chuckles at Marila, "So nice, and yet so put upon! Maybe we should persuade him to take lessons from the harper at least."

Marila chuckles, "That's a good idea."

Aidan grins. "Not me. I'd break the pipes before I even started. 'Sides, I'm no teacher."

"You are going to steal somebody's pipes, that isn't good." Craw says "I mean that is a bad thing to do, I mean stealing isn't right why do you want them stolen weyrwoamn, I mean you are not suppose to allow things like that to happen, what happen if somebody stole something of yours."

Telinda shrugs, "I know, but then I don't make noisy music racket!"

Coriana snorts "Music? Hardly!"

Imara finishes off her last fingertail and grins. "I don't think it would really be stealing, Craw. More like preserving the hearing of everybody in the Weyr. Have you ever heard him?"

Haven walks over from the lakeside meadow.

Craw nods as he sticks to the point "Yes it would be, I mean he really likes it so why would you take it from him, I mean that is just bad, stealing is bad no matter the reason, I mean what would you do if somebody stole arll your stuff, would you be happy? No, stealing shouldn't happen."

Liwellan hugs her knees to her and listens quietly with a nod.

Telinda sits down in the sand, "It's not really stealing, we'll give them to the harper, and when he has time he can go blow the harper's ear drums out!" She looks up and nods to Haven.

Haven meaders over from the meadow and smiles at Telinda, not wanting to interrupt the conversation

Marila gets up and walks towards the table.

Craw shakes his head in a stubborn manner. "No you said steal, I mean just 'cause he plays his pipes doesn't mean you should take it from him, I mean he spent marks on that and you should take it away from him, I mean he is just practising that is all, I mean if he keeps at it he will be better and that will be that, I mean why steal something, that is wrong."

Coriana smiles to the brownrider as she makes her way over to the group, then she turns back to Craw "We'd give them back, for sure. But maybe he'd forget about them, if we kept them long enough first.

Telinda grins, "It's called a -metaphor-" she says slowly to Craw, "Why would I want to steal something I can pay for?"

Marila shakes her head and glances about the table the grins.

Aidan looks up from his listening to the conversation and waves to Haven, then finishes off what's left of his baklava.

Imara shakes her head. "Craw, nobody ever said stealing is a good thing to do. We're just trying to find a way to save our eardrums." She stands and walks to the food table to refill her plate.

Craw turns to Coriana "You are taking something away from him and not telling him about it, I mean that is cruel, I mean taking from somebody just isn't right. I thought better of you, I mean i now I have to make sure nobody doesn't like my knife so I am going to have to keep it hiden, I don't know if I can trust you guys, I mean that is just unfair." Craw does look serious too.

Liwellan blinks at Craw and nods with a smile for Haven.

Coriana laughs "Oh, Craw! You're a dear! We wouldn't do any of those things! We were just joshing because they sound so horrible. Really, we'd never take what belongs to someone else!"

Marila settles back down at her seat carrying a bowl of spiderclaws, "Mmmmmmm..."

Imara snags a mug of citron juice from a passing server.

Coriana stands up and stretches, handing her bowl and plate to a drudge. "Well, I'm going to make sure that numbweed is stored properly."

Coriana strides over to the lakeside meadow.

Imara takes some of Mayana's juicy redfruit crisp for dessert.

Tr'bor walks over from the lakeside meadow.

Liwellan taps her foot quietly and waves after Coriana.

Telinda smiles, "We should tell a story, definitely story telling weather on a night like this."

Aidan scoots backwards so that the light of the bonfire no longer shines on him.

Craw watches Coriana leave before he can respond so he just sits down and hrms for a second. The lad doesn't seem to be too happy still but at least he is quieter then before, actually he is really quiet.

Haven grins and takes Coriana's spot at the table "Why don't you start us out then Telinda? Maybe tell everyone about Lightning Betty?"

Tr'bor settles himself down in the sands as he waves a hello.

Marila chews on her spiderclaw, "Oooooh this is good..

Telinda chuckles, "Oh, Lightning Betty. There's a name I haven't heard in awhile. Haven, you'll have to help out, I probably don't remember it all!"

Haven grins and has a mirthful look in her eyes "Oh, I'm sure we can get most of that horrid day straight"

Imara returns to her spot in the sand and digs into her dessert. She listens quietly to Telinda and Haven as she eats.

Tr'bor smirks. "Master Atanna mentioned something about Lightning Betty. I vaguely remember the words 'flea-bitten crotchety old nag' coming from her."

Haven chuckles "She got it most right. She left out sagged-backed and toothless"

Telinda leans back in the sand a little and grins over at Tr'bor, "That would describe that runner fairly aptly, yes."

Marila mouths the words, 'Lightning Betty?'

Shadara giggles and chuckles, "Sounds interesting, tell us more Telinda?" she asks as she settles down after a nanny brings Shaedar to her.

Liwellan nods "It does sound interesting." she adds quietly and smiles at Tr'bor with a nod of welcome.

Telinda smiles, tapping her cheek with a finger, "So, let's see. Eliora decided she wanted to buy a runner for R'lien's turning day, something we could breed from and make Southern into a place renowned for it's racing runners." She glances over to Haven, smirking.

Haven rolls her eyes "Of course, she didn't know a thing about runners and poor Eli... well, lets just say that traders could see her coming ten lengths away..."

Telinda nods, "So, she contacted Shay, who I think was an apprentice, and Shay mentioned she had the perfect specimen for Eliora's gift."

Shadara chuckles, "Oh dear.":

Haven nods "Shay convinced Eliora that not having teeth would mean the runner weighed less and could run faster."

Marila raises an eyebrow as she listens.

Tr'bor chuckles. "She didn't get the worst, did she?"

Telinda grins, "She got the very worst of everything. Lightning Betty wasn't even a female, she was a he, and so we couldn't even breed from him, but Eliora didn't know, and was positively thrilled with him!"

Imara listens attentively as she scoops up the last bites of her dessert and sets the dish on the sand next to her.

Aidan rolls his eyes, hands cupping behind his head as he listens.

Marila giggles at that.

Haven giggles "Actually, I think the 'original' Betty was indeed a female. It was Betty II that wasn't a mare."

Telinda wrinkles her nose at Haven, "Ah, see, I forget. Anyway, the sharding thing was half dead. Flea ridden. Sagged back. Would never be ridden. Haven and I decided we needed to get rid of those fleas before it went into the stables."

Marila tilts her head, "Did a dragon eat them?"

"The runners I mean not the fleas.." Marila grins.

Haven nods "I'm not sure what did it... the smell of the redwort or the water. It just... fell over. Oh no, Marila... the dragon's wouldn't go near the poor creature"

Marila chuckles delightedly.

Mayia walks over from the lakeside meadow.

Telinda grins, "Tia wasn't even hatched then, but every other dragon promptly went elsewhere." She nods to Haven, "Whatever it was, the sharding thing fell over, dead as a doornail. After a brief moment of panic over having killed the beast, Haven and I managed to prop the thing up the other side of the feeding grounds, to make it seem alive. Eliora thought she was grazing happily. Meanwhile, we had to find another runner. Quickly!"

Telinda smiles and waves to the new person. "Come grab a seat in the sand and some food!" she calls out, breaking off in her story.

Marila laughes still as she listens. She chews as she watches the pair of riders.

Tr'bor laughs! "Great Faranthe, what happened?"

Haven nods emphatically "We couldn't let Eliora realize she'd been duped. It would have broken her heart. So, while R'lien and Telinda were commenting on Betty grazing waaaay across the meadow, I high tailed it to the hold and bought the oldest runner they had to replace it. A male, and with spots! Betty was solid brown."

Mayia smiles and curtseys. "Good evening..."

Telinda nods, "So, then, we had to hide the spots. With boot polish!"

Shadara giggles, "Oh dear, you're kidding?"

Imara chuckles as she listens to the story.

Marila nearly chokes on her spiderclaw she's laughing so hard.

Telinda shakes her head, "Oh no, worse than that, we had to hide the most obvious sexual differences!"

Haven says "Telinda got a blanket and we hung it over his hind quarters. We told Eliora that the bath had uncovered a layer of dirt, explaining that runners as fast as Betty kick up lots of dirt and it sticks to them. That was why she wasn't all brown anymore"

Tr'bor falls over onto the warm sand. "Oh, save me from women like the two of you."

Aidan puts his face in his hands, close to sobbing with laughter.

Telinda frowns, "Didn't we have to try and black the teeth in, Haven? I seem to remember something about that!" she adds, handing Mayia a wine skin, "Here, sit down, and stop all the curtesying nonsense" she says warmly.

Shadara chuckles and shakes her head as she listens, her shaking shoulders actually soothing her youngster intoi a deeper sleep

Marila whoops with laughter, she doubles over in the sand catching her breath.

Mayia is ravished and and takes some spiderclaws from the food table. She smiles as she takes the wineskin and a seat. She feels happy for some reason and sits back to enjoy the merriment.

Haven nods "I do believe so. Oh, it was such a mess.... well, to our horror, Eliora began slipping away to the Hold and bragging about the new runner stock the Weyr was going to breed and that we'd put Betty in the next gather races."

Telinda sighs, shaking her head, "Of course there was no way the runner would win, or probably even make it to the starting line, but Eliora was convinced and R'lien didn't want to disappoint her."

Imara chuckles harder and covers her mouth with her hands as it quickly turns into loud laughter. She wipes her eyes as they begin to water.

Haven says "So, I searched every hold that has fast stock and found a wonder of a filly down at Sadrid. Cost R'lien every free mark he had, but we bought her and it would take 6 sevendays to have her ridden here. The newest Betty was a lovely solid black, so then we had to devise a way to switch the two without Eliora realising it"

Telinda sweeps a hand through her hair, grinning madly, "I think we tried everything possible to turn that runner back into the nag that was the original betty. Finally, we can up with covering the second betty with black polish, telling Eliora that we were improving her coat, and that it was all due to good Southern food. We even managed to convince her that the teeth were growing back!"

Aidan chuckles softly. "And she was a -Weyrwoman-?" he drolls sarcastically, more to himself than to the group assembled.

Marila howls with laughter helplessly.

Haven giggles "And that it had an allergic reaction to something and was loosing its sway back due to mumps or some such. The terrible thing is.... she believed every single thing! The new, real Betty arrived and was racing at the Hold without Eliora realising that she'd been duped... by everyone!"

Shadara looks at Aidan and she frowns a little, Not everyone knows about runners Aidan."

Aidan leans over and pokes Shadara in the shoulder. "Teasing," he whispers, grinning.

Telinda grins, "And that's about that for that story. The old betty was retired, the original buried, and the new one is still racing, and breeding us a fine herd for Southern!"

Imara collapses on the sand, shaking with laughter.

Marila applauds the story, she's been laughing so hard her eyes are wet with tears.

Tr'bor laughs, having dealt with the runners here.

Liwellan stands and sighs with a nod. She waves before sneaking off not wanting to interrupt.

Liwellan walks toward the lakeside meadow.

Haven wipes away a tear from her laughing "I think the best part was telling Eliora that Betty was lying on the ground asleep and not dead and Eliora telling R'lien to hush lest he wake her up from her nap..."

Craw has never dealt with runners so the jokes that everyone gets, Craw doesn't. A confused look is on his face as he sits to the side trying to listen to the story but a puzzled look is the most prevaling look "Runners get mumps stop them from swaying side to side? I mean that sounds weird, I mean runners are like that? I thought mumps just gave you, well mumps, I mean that is weird, uhm, you sure about that?"

Aidan looks to Craw, and grins. "Now you know how we feel when you talk so fast," he teases, winking to the candidate.

Haven stands up and stretches, hand on her lower back. "Oh, Craw... maybe I'll get Coriana to put you on stable duty for a sevenday and let you ask the stable master that. G'night all, I need to make sure my children are in bed sleeping and not climbing the redfruit tree again"

Telinda smiles and waves, "Good night Haven!"

Marila waves to Haven, "G'night ma'am."

Haven walks toward the lakeside meadow.

You say "So, does anyone else have amusing stories?""

Imara is still face down in the sand laughing, though it has lessened considerably, but she waves in the direction of Haven's voice.

Tr'bor chuckles, and yawns. "Yeesh, that paperwork wears me out."

Tr'bor drags himself to his feet. "G'night, all."

Marila blinks, "My sister tried to teach me about Kissing by trying to get me to kiss her dragon.."

Tr'bor strides over to the lakeside meadow.

Shadara giggles at Marila's comment, "I learned about kissing when Saith... well nevermind."

Craw looks at Aidan with a confused look as he just doesn't get what he means but turns to Telinda, "Oh no, I mean I don't have any stories about runners, I mean I never been on a runner, i want to be on a runner when I go to the mountains but I don't have any storys about runners, or the weyr either, I mean I have only been here for the candidacy so how can I have storys about the weyr? I mean sorry and all."

Auralia strides over from the lakeside meadow.

Nareisa strides over from the lakeside meadow.

Arliana strides over from the lakeside meadow.

Syrena walks over from the lakeside meadow.

Nareisa points at Telinda. "That's the Weyrwoman."

Telinda grins over at everyone, "Well, this is a fine thing, and you don't need to have stories about the Weyr, anything will do!"

Arliana nods a bit, following Nareisa's pointing.

Auralia wanders through from the candidates barracks, and gives all her friends a wave. She looks around, saying, "Hi!" She gives the Weyrwoman and the other riders a quick, but respectful nod.

Syrena looks on a bit apprehensively. "She looks busy. Why don't we wait until she's done?"

Imara sits up, calm once again. "No stories here, and I think I'm going to go get some sleep." She stands and waves to the people gathered around the bonfire, and to the people just arriving.

Saith lumbers over from the lakeside meadow.

Arliana hovers around hear Syrena, then waves a bit at Craw and Marila.

Syrena carefully holds her baby firelizard on her shoulder and stands on the outside, looking, observing before she buts her nose in and disturbs someone important. Patience can be taught, or learned apparently.

Telinda smiles and waves to Imara, then looks over to the new arrivals, "Hello! Can I help you?"

Syrena jumps a little as she's noticed and smiles a little shyly. "We don't want to disturb you. You look like you're busy."

Marila finishes her spiderclaws, "Just a cookout and story telling.."

Imara walks toward the lakeside meadow.

Telinda chuckles, "Oh, you're not disturbing me, I'm just telling stories!"

Nareisa flops down on the sand, "They want to stay," she says.

Telinda grins at Nareisa, "That's to the point!"

Arliana bobs her head in greeting, giving Nariesa a blink. A shrug follows. "My aunt was supposed to seethe headwoman, but..."

Saith starts to whine a little as she settles beside her lifemate, snuffling the are a bit as she tries to get comfortable, eyes whirling a bit of a greenish color.

Nareisa blinkblinks. "Er... well that's what they said..."

Syrena blushes again. "Well, I.. uh.. I did just come up to see what the weyr was like. From the Hold. I was born there. And I impressed my little one at your gold's hatching the other day." She adresses Telinda directly. "I.. I'd like to stay, ma'am."

Telinda grins and nods to Syrena, "First off, my name is Telinda, Ma'am is not required here. We're all pretty relaxed, and well, what can you do that would be useful?" she asks, flickering a look to Arliana, "I'm afraid I don't always know what the headwoman knows, though we could wait for her if you'd like?"

Marila wrinkles her mouth a little enviously as she notes the hatchling, she stands up to investigate the dessert options.
Syrena pets her little brown almost distractedly, but not quiet. "Do? Well, I can cook, and clean. Most Hold-bred girls can do that. I can do a bit of sewing. I can learn anything you need, pretty much. I learn fast, and I'm adaptable."

Shadara hrms and looks at Saith, "Don't you dare start that again lass." she mutters under her breath as Saith's whining gets louder and more invasive on the conversations going on around the beach.

Nareisa blushes "That's more than I can do," she mumbles to herself.

Arliana absently scuffs her boot along the ground. "Well, she didn't say she had seen her. I've worked a lot on my ffamily's cothold. Some of everything, I guess. My sewing's terrible though."

Telinda nods to Syrena, "Sounds like you'd be useful. What do you enjoy the most?" she asks, then grins at Arliana, "Well, then, sewing it won't be. Can you look after children? Cook? Clean?"

Syrena twists her toe into the sand a little, "Um.. I enjoy to cook and sew. I can mend, or sew tapestries. I'm not good yet, but I've learned."

Telinda nods, thinking in a pause for a moment, "Well, now, we lost one of our seamstresses to search. Would you fill in there for us? I'm sure some of the candidates could do with the assistance in mending their robes."

Dragon> Southern Weyr sense that Saith gives a deep rumbling whine, << There's another one of those interesting things on the beach. >>

Dragon> Southern Weyr sense that Tiarnath whines << I want interesting! I'm bored! >>

Syrena glances around to the group and nods. "I'd love to help. I can teach sewing as well, if you've need of it." She smiles, the gesture lighting her dark features.

Arliana has at least some experience with this. "I have three brothers. One older, two younger. They're all still alive. A sister too." Her expression is faintly irritated, "If that doesn't give a hint.."

Dragon> Southern Weyr sense that Luiseth seems unconcerned with anything on the beach, she's found something quite nice here. << Mmmm. >>

Saith keeps whining, starting to pace back and forth now as she pivots her head to keep an eye on the crowd. Her whine is getting more distracting and more off key the more she paces.

Nareisa winces "Why is she doing that?"

Telinda rumages in her pocket, and tosses Syrena a resident knot, "Here, better wear this, it's getting mighty confusing around here lately." An eyebrow quirks at Arliana, "OKie, you can do the nurseries then! Easy solution that one. You'd better take one of those knots as well" she adds, tossing another at Arliana

Shadara gives a mutter and she glares at Saith, yes nice, sweet even tempered Shadara is glaring at Saith, "I Don't want to... But Saith... Oh all right, before you crack all our ears with that off key whine." She then turns and walks over to Telinda and whispers in her ear.

Arliana twiddles the knot in her fingers, "Thank you." She edges away from the whining dragon.

Syrena catches the knot and her smile brightens even further. "Oh, Thank you, Telinda." She ties the knot onto her shoulder, taking off her Hold knot with a little bit pf pride.

Shadara whispers "Uhm Tel, Saith says there's something interesting on the beach, she did this when we found a candidate, do you think you could ask the new arrivals to please line up away from the crowd so Saith can check them out?"

Craw stands up and waves to those at the sands before heading back to the barracks.

Craw strides over to the lakeside meadow.

Telinda grins at Syrena, then sighs, turning to Shadara, "Really? Oh, ok!" She turns to the two newcomers, "Would you please line up, Saith needs to check something out."

Syrena blinks in confusion and moves a step back to stand next to Arilana who had been half hiding behind her. "Uh.. alright.."

Auralia watches this latest process with a frown. What on Pern????? She stops. This looks familiar. Very, very, familiar.

Saith just keeps pacing and whining, tail twitching back and forth as she watches the crowd, off-key whine still going despite her lifemate's getting people to do what she wants.

Arliana stands up a bit, "But, why?" She shoves her hands behind her again.

Shadara nods, "It's either that or she keeps up that awful whining." she says as she moves over to the new people that are lining up. "Away from the crowd please, Saith has to get close to you for this, but don't worry, she won't hurt you, I promise.

Mayia finishes her meal and rises. She nods as she makes her exit.

Mayia walks toward the lakeside meadow.

Syrena steadies her little brown as he starts to wake, crooning at him softly. She starts as Shadara asks her to move and takes several more steps back.

Arliana nods to Shadara. She looks rather nervous. "Okay."

Nareisa peers, and makes an 'o' with her mouth. This IS familiar.

Saith creeps slowly forward and she starts circling around the pair, not so close that they get nervous. She then extends her head very slowly and she snifts at Syrena's feet, but still not so close, she then peers at her lifemate and rumbles.

Syrena jumps a little, but stands perfectly still. She's gotten awfully pale again. Oy. She's not used to things so big. She leans over to Arliana and whispers. "They don't seem that big in the Hold Courtyard."

Shadara Sighs and mutters under her breath and shakes a finger at her lifemate, "You do this every time something good is happening." she says before looking at Syrene, "Syrene, was it? Could you Please, please say the name Saith three times in a row and then you can scritch Saith's eyeridges if you like, she's being a little strange and I'm hoping it might calm her down, but you don't have to if you don't want to."

Marila raises her eyebrows.

Arliana edges away from Shadara, Saith, and Syrena a bit.

Syrena squeeks very softly but steps forward a little and whispers. "It's uh.. Syrena." The correction is automatic and she reaches forward tentatively to scritch, eyes half-closed.

Nareisa just blinks. "Say it three times in a row?" she murmurs to herself.

Three times? Okay.. "Saith.. Saith... Saith?" More of a question than an answer.

Theida walks over from the lakeside meadow.

Shadara nods at Nareisa, "Saith gets very strange sometimes." She then sighs again as Saith shifts and moves over to Arliana, again sniffing at the girl's feet, whine sounding out again, "Uhm, young lady, can you please do the same thing as your friend just did, please?"

Theida wanders onto the beach a little warily. SHe sniffs the air, testing and comes forewards. "How'd everything go?" She's covered in dirt and dust, but at least she avoided that /smell/ all day.

Dragon> Southern Weyr sense that Saith rumbles in confusion for a moment, << They both smell good, they both sound right, can we keep them both and make them dress in the white things? >>

Syrena steps out of the way almost too quickly and nearly falls over in her haste to not be so close. Ooh my, s'big. Intimidating.

Dragon> Southern Weyr sense that Tiarnath mumbles << Do we have to? >>

Arliana stops dead in her tracks. "Uhm. Saith? Saith." A pause, then, "Saith."She very tentatively stretches out a hand towards the dragon's eyeridge, "Never get to see them so close at home," she murmurs.

Marila peels a citron as she walks back to her seat, she hmmms a bit as she examins the skin.

Nareisa waves to Theida. "You missed the food."

Saith gives another deep whine and her head swings from pointing at Syrena and then at Arliana before she plants herself in front of Shadara and nudges her firmly towards both girls.

Shadara looks at Saith and then frowns before looking over at Telinda and shrugging, "Uhm, she can't choose between them, do I ask them both?"

Telinda rolls her eyes, "You mean I just got myself two new residents, and you're searching them from under my nose?!" She sighs, and waves a hand, "Oh, I guess so, Shadara, I guess so."

Syrena lets her little brown sink into her arms as he begins to wake, though still in that sleepy state. She looks over at her new friend. "Uh.. what's going on? Do you know?"

Marila raises her eyebrows and blinks.

Dragon> Southern Weyr sense that Luiseth sounds amused. << It's your fault we have to have them at all, isn't it Tiarnath? >> she asks teasingly.

Arliana glances at Syrena, her head shaking back and forth. She's obviously thoroughly confused.

Nareisa mumbles "I've never seen anyone searched by saying a dragon's name three times."

Aidan nods at Nareisa's words. "Haven never told me to do that.."

Dragon> Southern Weyr sense that Tiarnath snorts at Luiseth << It's Rnayth's fault! Honest! >>

Shadara shrugs, "Well I can't help it if saith has a nose for these things, she did search E'dar after all." She then looks at Syrena and Arliana, "Well now, I do happen to know what's going on, As you may or may not be aware, Southern Weyr has a clutch of eggs on the sands, getting ready to hatch and Saith here thinks there is a good possibility that you may both have lifemates out there on the sands. She would like for both of you to stand for the clutch."

Theida pauses in her tracks, "Food? I missed food?" SHe holds her hand up like a scale, "Food on one side... Stinking like numbweed on the other..." She moves her hands up and down as if weighing theses options, "Nay, better to miss the feast /and/ the stink."

Syrena's jaw drops. "Uh.." Dragon? For her? She's completely afraid of the things. "Um.. well, can I still sew?"

Telinda nods to Syrena, "You're going to have to, we've candidate robes to be finishing!"

Arliana furrows her forehead, "Pa won't like it." She pauses. Pa sent her off to her aunt without warning her. "I'll.. I'll stand. Yes."

Arliana grimaces. "But. I can't sew."

Nareisa nods. "Lots of food. I told you they'd be finished."

Syrena isn't sure what she's getting in to, but as long as she can sew, its al right with her. "Alright."

Telinda shakes her head, "Oh well, I'm doomed! I swear it!"

Marila tilts her head at Telinda, "Why do you say that ma'am?"

Telinda grins at Marila, "I need people to make sure this weyr is ready for the hatching, and everyone keeps getting searched as soon as I hire them!"

Aidan grins. "Why not hire on Candidates in place of their chore?" he says, looking to Telinda. Teasing, of course.

Arliana looks back and forth, "But what do I need to do then?"

Telinda wiggles her finger at Aidan, "Done! You're hired! You start work in the kitchens tomorrow!" She smiles at Arliana, "Shadara, you'd better disclose the rest of the information."

Aidan throws his arms up. "But then again, what do I know?? I'm only a Candidate, for Faranth's sake!"

Shadara blinks as Plumleaf suddenly pops out of no where and starts chittering loudly and noisily, "Oh dear the nanny sent Plum, Tel I've got to go feed Shaedar, can you get these two settled in the barracks for me?"

Nareisa gets up and dusts sand off her clothes, not really improving the look of them, but... "I'm going over there now," she offers.

Telinda grins at Shadara, then beams at Nareisa, "Would you? That would be great!"

Nareisa nods to the Weyrwoman. "Sure."

Auralia stands, "I'll come, too. If you want me too." She smiles at the two newest candidates, "Welcome and congratulations!"

Aidan stands up along with everyone else. "I need some sleep, too. Night, everyone," he calls to those around the bonfire, then starts off towards the lakeside meadow.

Arliana nods a bit, "Thanks.." She takes a step or two towards Nareisa.

Syrena tries to hide her yawn against the little one on her arms. Eyes turn to look at Nareisa, she follows along behind Arliana now.

Shadara grins, Thank you all." she says before taking off at a fast trot, saith moving with her.

Shadara strides over to the lakeside meadow.

Saith ambles toward the lakeside meadow.

Nareisa grins, "Oh yeah, congratulations..." she forgot about that bit. "Er ... this way," heading towards the meadow

Nareisa walks toward the lakeside meadow.

Auralia strides over to the lakeside meadow.

Syrena strides over to the lakeside meadow.

Arliana waves a bit and follows Nareisa.

Arliana strides over to the lakeside meadow.

Marila blinks, "I didn't expect that."

Theida smiles, "Well, Congratulations and I'm off to find myself a feast..." She ambles off to the meadow.

Telinda shakes her head, "Neither did I, though they usually come right up until the hatching."

Theida strides over to the lakeside meadow.

Aidan strides over to the lakeside meadow.
